At A Un Tono, we are the only official ZO distributor in Spain. In addition to offering specialist advice before purchase, we also have our own in-house technical service to inspect, adjust and maintain these instruments.
A new generation of lightweight ZO tubas
For years, tubas made from plastic materials were mainly sold in BBb. They were eye-catching and very lightweight instruments, but there was still room for improvement in areas such as intonation, response, comfort and overall construction.
At A Un Tono, we have worked with ZO on the development of the new versions of both the plastic BBb tuba and the new plastic CC tuba. The aim was to create more reliable instruments that are better suited to the real needs of students and musicians.
The CC version is not an improvised adaptation or a handmade modification of a BBb tuba. It is a tuba developed and manufactured specifically in CC, following the studies, tests and adjustments required to achieve accurate and balanced intonation.
What makes this new CC tuba different?
It was designed at the factory as a genuine CC tuba. The length of its tubing, its piston valve system and its acoustic behaviour were studied specifically for this pitch.
A lightweight instrument that retains a genuine tuba voice
One of the most surprising aspects when trying these models is their sound. Although much of the body is made from a highly resistant plastic material, the response retains the depth, focus and presence expected from a tuba.
Put simply: this is not a toy shaped like a tuba, but a real tuba built from different materials.
This is possible because the key components responsible for sound production and operation retain a metal construction. The tubas feature a brass piston valve system and a leadpipe also made from brass, following the same philosophy used in other ZO instruments.
Combining the lightweight body with these brass components helps produce a more natural attack, a stable response and a playing feel much closer to that of a conventional metal tuba.
Main advantages of ZO plastic tubas
Reduced weight
They are much lighter than a traditional tuba, making transport easier and reducing physical strain during long performances.
Authentic sound
The brass leadpipe and piston valve system help preserve a stable response and a recognisable tuba sound.
Affordable price
Their manufacturing process makes it possible to offer an affordable instrument without compromising functional and reliable construction.
Versatile use
They can be used for practice, street performances, marching groups, bands, parades and informal rehearsals.
Who is a plastic tuba recommended for?
Lightweight ZO tubas can be especially useful for several types of musician.
- Children and young students who need a lighter instrument when they begin learning the tuba.
- Musicians in street bands, processions or parades who spend many hours playing while standing or moving.
- Bands and music schools looking for an affordable, durable instrument that can be easily shared between students.
- People with back, shoulder or mobility problems who want to continue playing with less physical strain.
- Tuba players who need a second instrument for rehearsals, travel, outdoor performances or situations in which they prefer not to use their main tuba.
Especially comfortable for street performances
In a street band, procession or parade, every kilogram matters. The reduced weight allows musicians to play for longer with less fatigue and makes travelling between performances easier.

Colours and finishes: matt black, lacquer-effect and silver-effect
One of the interesting features of ZO plastic tubas is the wide variety of colours in which they can be produced. However, the versions most commonly sold are matt black and finishes that imitate the appearance of a metal tuba in lacquered or silver-plated form.
It is important to understand that these finishes are not produced using the same techniques as those used on a conventional brass tuba.
On a metal tuba, lacquer is applied directly to the brass and a silver-plated finish is achieved through an electroplating process. On a plastic-bodied tuba, both the lacquer effect and the silver effect are created using films or layers of finish applied to the outer surface.
Using the same process as on a metal tuba would greatly increase the cost and would also be incompatible with the materials used for the instrument body. The aim of these tubas is to preserve three essential qualities: low weight, an affordable price and reliable functional quality.
Do they require maintenance?
Although the body is not made from brass, the instrument still includes metal parts and mechanical components that require proper maintenance.
The piston valve system should be cleaned and lubricated regularly. It is also advisable to check the tuning slides, felts, springs and overall alignment of the instrument, just as with any other tuba.
As the official ZO distributor in Spain, A Un Tono can provide inspection, adjustment and technical maintenance for these tubas in our own workshop.
Frequently asked questions about ZO plastic tubas
Does a plastic tuba sound like a tuba?
Yes. Its response is different from that of a tuba made entirely from brass, but it retains a genuine tuba sound thanks to its acoustic design, brass leadpipe and metal piston valve system.
Is it a good tuba for a child?
Its low weight makes it a very attractive option for children and young players who still find it difficult to hold or transport a metal tuba.
Is the CC tuba genuinely built in CC?
Yes. The CC version was designed and manufactured specifically in this pitch. It is not a BBb tuba that has been modified afterwards.
Can it be used in a concert band?
Yes. It can be used in rehearsals, bands, schools and outdoor performances. Its suitability will depend on the player’s level and the specific requirements of each ensemble.
Where can I have a ZO plastic tuba repaired?
A Un Tono is the official ZO distributor in Spain and has its own technical service specialising in brass instruments.
A practical alternative for playing with less weight
ZO plastic CC and BBb tubas are not intended to replace every metal tuba or compete directly with a high-end professional instrument. Their main strength is that they offer a different solution for musicians who prioritise comfort, low weight and an accessible price.
They are especially suitable for beginners, street performances, long periods of standing while playing, or as a second tuba that is easy to transport.
Thanks to the improvements introduced in the new versions and the dedicated development of the CC model, ZO now offers one of the most complete options in the market for lightweight plastic tubas.
