Wessex BBb tuba Excelsior TB570s

A manageable 5/4 compensated tuba with a true contrabass sound

The Wessex Excelsior TB570S Silver-Plated BBb Tuba was developed to overcome one of the main limitations of many traditional compensated BBb basses: a large and cumbersome body combined with a bore that is relatively small for the overall dimensions. Wessex has redesigned these proportions to create a more comfortable and balanced instrument with a genuine contrabass voice.

Its body is only marginally larger than a standard EEb tuba, yet it features a graduated bore of 19.5 to 19.7 mm and the large bell throat expected from a true 5/4 tuba. This combination produces a deep, broad sound with the power required to support large ensembles.

The 480 mm bell contributes to a rich and expansive tone while maintaining definition. As the silver-plated version, the TB570S offers a focused response, clear articulation and precise projection, helping the sound remain present in wind bands, brass bands and orchestral settings.

Particular attention has been given to player comfort. The reach to the fourth valve is similar to that of an EEb tuba, avoiding the stretched hand position often associated with larger compensated instruments. At 900 mm high and approximately 10.85 kg, the Excelsior is manageable for a tuba with this tonal capacity.

Its balanced construction also makes it suitable for marching and performances involving movement. The instrument is supplied with a Wessex Chief mouthpiece and a lightweight foam-body case with robust wheels. The compatible B210 gig bag is available separately.

Benefits of the Wessex Excelsior TB570S Silver-Plated Tuba

The compensating system provides a practical and stable response in the low register. Its generously proportioned bore also avoids the restricted feel sometimes associated with traditional compensated BBb basses.

The combination of the 480 mm bell and expansive bell throat creates a powerful, nuanced contrabass tone. It can provide a solid foundation in wind bands, brass bands, orchestras and other large ensembles.

Its compact design and comfortable fourth-valve reach improve the player’s posture and reduce unnecessary strain. The silver-plated finish supports clear articulation and focused projection, even at strong dynamic levels.
